A class action lawsuit has been filed in New York federal court by a Staten Island resident accusing Rite Aid Corp. of misrepresenting that its store-brand glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can “help rebuild cartilage and lubricate joints” easing the symptoms of arthritis, even though significant scientific evidence contradicts those claims.
The complaint alleges “the bulk, if not all, of the reliable and published scientific studies demonstrate that Rite Aid’s claims are false and misleading,” claimed the plaintiff. The lawsuit specifically points to a study by the National Institute of Health in 2006, which concluded that glucosamine and chondroitin, individually or in combination, were ineffective in treating arthritis. The plaintiff seeks to represent a class of New York State consumers who purchased Rite Aid varieties of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.
